the seeds we sow now are our hope…
As the gardening seasons starts waning here in the north east and shadows start lengthening, the time to put your garden to bed is here. There is something sad about this task. It is time to cut back a stand of Shasta Daisies, which flowered beautifully in the summer, whose iridescent white blooms are now brown stalks with black heads. The Purple headed Echinacea’s standing tall and dry beside the fading Russian Sage. One can’t help but feel sad. But in those dry heads is a gardener’s treasure trove of seeds that can be sown to bring back more bloom next season. This is a great time to collect seeds from late flowering plants and sprinkle them directly back into your garden or put them into an envelope for next years garden. In all the perceived ugliness of your waning garden there is still hope. Gardening is definitely good for your soul.
