The Last Leaf by O’Henry

From my desk I can see the maple tree across the yard.  I have been watching the leaves fall off the tree signaling winter.  Every year I sit here at my desk and watch the leaves and wait for that leaf to drop.  Every year there is one leaf that always seem to defy gravity, the cold and all odds, and it hangs on.  It is almost like me, defiantly holding onto the fall, dreading the winter.  I find myself guessing which branch will hold that last leaf. It brings to mind O’Henry’s story of The Last Leaf.  It sad tale but it makes me think of all the times I have focused on the negative and missed everything else.  Now as I sit here dreading the winter… I should be glad that I sit here, with my health, heat, food and a roof over my head.  There is someone out there counting their leaves down for a more somber reason.
