Planting Bulbs in a Basket
I read this technique in one of my many gardening books. Plating bulbs in a wire basket is useful when you have bulbs that are tender that need indoor winter storage or bulbs that you intend to move to a different location. I can’t say how many bulbs I have lost because I never dug them up for the winter. This seems easy enough to try.
- Line the bottom of the basket with soil, so that the bulbs will be planted at their correct depth.
- Position the bulbs into the basket, evenly spacing them
- Fill the basket with soil and lower it into the hole so that the basket rim is just below the ground level.
- Cover the basket to the top with soil.
Did you know that covering the area with sharp gravel will deter slugs? I have a raggedy laundry basket which should work just fine. I am thinking about using this for daffodils, digging them up to save them from marauding squirrels. This would be an easy way for me to find my and bring in the gladiolas which can’t survive the winter in this zone.
